Design Thinking Japan launches AI Atlas, continuous geopolitical AI intelligence covering 197 countries
Tokyo, July 14, 2026. Design Thinking Japan (DTJ) today hosted the launch of AI Atlas at its Tokyo offices, introducing a per-country intelligence platform that reads the geopolitics of AI continuously rather than annually.
AI Atlas delivers a reading for every one of 197 countries, every cycle, in two layers: where a country stands today and where it is heading. The gap between the two readings is the intelligence. Existing instruments describe the present state once a year; AI Atlas measures the motion.
The platform grew out of DTJ's own research. Future Signals 2026 named the fragmenting global AI order as one of its central signals, and AI Atlas is the instrument built to watch it. Every country reading is reviewed by a geopolitical analyst before publication, and the level of oversight applied is permanently recorded with the result. AI Atlas is citable, and the same neutral read applies to all 197 countries; no mandate decides what gets covered.
The launch brought together guests from industry, academia, and government, including attendees from Fortune, Microsoft, EY, Takeda Pharmaceutical, the World Economic Forum, venture capital funds, technology founders, and Japan's Digital Agency. The program featured the platform's first public walkthrough, opening with a multi-layer reading of a single country.
